You can admit its awful. It smells like rotting sorghum and nail polish. It's for rich CCP officials to get wasted on at party meetings/dinners. You're not meant to smell or taste it, it's just for getting drunk and conspicuously showing off their wealth.

I can't remember the first proper wine that got me into wine but I do remember the first red wine which got me hooked on good red wine. 1991 Penfolds Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz. It was in 1994 and I was "baby sitting" with my then girlfriend. I not only fell in love with her (she is now my wife) but also Aussie Shiraz 😂😂😂

So cool to see my favourite Bottle appear here in this tasting. I’m not a wine connoisseur but enjoy a nice variety on the dryer side. Back in the mid 90s Some friends and I would frequent a Cigar and Wine establishment called Hemingway’s in the Old Town area of San Diego. They stocked many a lovely vintage Port and Tawny to enjoy with a nice cigar. However for me the main stars of the establishment were the 1870 and the 1850 Madeira’s. I can still remember siting there with that beautiful floral bouquet, deep rich balanced and oh so consummately smooth palette. I’ll never forget savouring every sip while gazing at the streamers running down the inside of the glass and imagining I was drinking something that was made before President Lincoln took office! I was tasting history! In retrospect such a privilege is nearly priceless but at $50 for a 3oz glass of the 1850 and $35 for the 1870 it was a true bargain! I remember I bought 2 bottles of the 1850 from a wine cellar in down town San Diego for $263 each (1998) Sadly I wasn’t smart enough to save them :). Cheers!

If you’ve tasted the Standish lamella can compare the two(I know vintage matters also but just a general comparison of the style and quality since I have never had a Sami odi (not available here, the closest place that I can find a bottle is Hong Kong) but just had a bottle of lamella 2020 and really liked it

I need to get back into MT, mainly because I love sweet Chenin - I’ve tried 13 vintages to date. Oldest being the 1968. Chateau Musar and Viña Tondonia are other classic examples of wines where you can easily pick up back vintages for a vertical tasting.

Had it. It's actually easy to get at Asian groceries where liquor is sold. Although, my experience with it would suggest that it belongs in Walmart's automotive department along with other brands of brake fluid. Somm there is seriously having his tolerance for industrial reagents tested. Piquant notes of K2R Spotlifter with a hint of acetylene...hmm. Seriously, though...even university students won't touch the stuff. China should be embarrassed to even admit the stuff exists, much less that they consider it "luxurious". No moaning about hating moutai being anti-Chinese, either. The stuff is objectively horrible. It doesn't matter who came up with it; the affront here is that it simply exists in the first place. Maybe if you combined it with Malört...? I know, two wrongs usually don't make a right, but the results might be of use by the DoD here in chemical warfare, provided that the actual mixing result doesn't result in conjuring up chemical reactions that can level everything in a 10 km radius. The Chinese guy, though, is a laff-riot. He's trying WAY too hard to extol the praises of this, when it's also clear to him that it's only two steps removed from paint thinner. "Acquired taste" indeed! 😆

Moutai is definitely the most expensive liquor in China. In the 1980s, when China's economy was still very backward, most people couldn't afford it or drink it. Usually only officials can drink from them. The corrupt CCP must give priority to having the best things.

LOL... Moutai (茅台) is about $280 (375mL) today. But, remember, it was $140 in 2009 and $30 in 1999. The price is simply hype from China's bubble economy. Remember, this is a "gift" liquor in China. Only two kinds of people buy it -- speculators and people who are buying it as a gift for whomever they are trying to kiss up to, impress or bribe. Nobody who actually drinks this stuff actually pays for it. Now that China's economy is collapsing I expect Moutai's prices to collapse along with it. -- Taste wise, it is a viscous Soghum distillate. Think of it as drinking smooth, high proof, perfume. It is also NOT too different from other similar liquors that cost a fraction of the price like JiuGui (酒鬼) or even cheap offerings like XinHuaChun FenJiu (杏花村汾酒) or Confucius' House Wine (孔府家酒). Heck, it's similar to Taiwanese Kinmen Soghum (金門高粱) too if you want to buy something that isn't from Commie China. I am not saying these are all the same in taste and quality, but they are similar like all forms of decent Brandy are similar. Try something in the $20~30 bracket or before you throw $300 at something you may or may not like.

None of the brands u mentioned are remotely similar in taste. Its just that u r not good enough in tasting makes u think they are similar. moutai can sell so expensive is because they are so much better in their type of note. They are the only company who can create this strong note in soysauce in this purity. If u drink Langjiu whose product also targets the soysauce note u will see the difference.
